Scholastic Design Internship Timeline

PROCESS

Discover, Define, Design, and Deliver

After an initial round of testing with administrators, I joined the team to conduct research on the teachers’ experience. As we synthesized inspiring insights from user interviews, we iteratively redefined the problems and adapted the design. From personas all the way to mid-fidelity prototypes, we gradually tested versions of the application.

I created a research brief that outlined our goals and intended user groups.

Script Icon

Script

I wrote a script for our user test that was broken down into categories.
I iterated on the script with our designers to ensure that the prototype and script would flow well.

I contacted over 100 teachers whose information we sourced from Scholastic reps.

PROOF OF CONCEPT

Prototype 1

After an initial round of discovery research and user interviews with administrators, the design team created this prototype to test with teachers.

  • Addition of global navigation

  • Programs and Mags on one page

  • Mags password in global nav

  • Addition of Data & Groups

  • Managing access folded in to student detail page

Prototype 2

Halfway through the testing, we realized that there were several issues with our prototype and decided to tweak the design for the rest of the users.

1) Teachers were struggling to distinguish between Magazines & Programs

  • Magazines & Programs separated on two tabs

2) Teachers could not discover the Magazines password editor

  • Moved Classroom Magazines password outside of global nav

3) Teachers could not figure out how to remove access for students to programs

  • Changed manage access to be more discoverable

STAKEHOLDER MEETING

Prototype 3

We met with Classroom Magazines to discuss the final prototype.

Notably, Magazines and Programs were on one page but separated by subheaders.

We moved the Magazines password under a subheader as well.

We received feedback from them on labeling and the onboarding flow that will be implemented in the future.

FINAL PRESENTATION & NEXT STEPS

I had the opportunity to present my work to Scholastic executives and get their feedback. The project gained more visibility and will likely have another round of user testing in the future to expand on our understanding of how teachers user data & groups.
